‘Odds and Ends’ will be a weekly post containing (in my humble opinion) some of the best blog posts, videos and tutorials on the web. It will cover a wide range of topics centred around, but not limited to, my interest in web design and development. This week we will look at how Google is trying to support security on websites, and some useful tutorials for WordPress.

Google made it clear recently that they will consider the security of a website in their search ranking algorithms, this is part of their announcement:

We’ve seen positive results, so we’re starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal. For now it’s only a very lightweight signal — affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content — while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS.
